Local attractions in the forest of dean and wye valley
If you’re staying in the Forest of Dean, you won’t be short of things to do.
This is one of those places where you can keep it simple and still have a really good time. A walk from the door, a quiet pub, maybe a slow afternoon by the river. Or, if you feel like getting out and exploring, there’s plenty within a short drive.
We’ve put together a collection of local attractions in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley that we think are genuinely worth a visit. Take a look through and see what feels right for your stay. Some are easy to miss if you don’t know where to look.
Everything is also pinned on our interactive map, so you can dip in and plan as much or as little as you like
A Little Bit of Everything
Some guests arrive with a full plan. Others don’t plan anything at all.
Most fall somewhere in the middle.
The Forest works well either way. You can head out for the day and try something new, or just pick one place, take your time, and come back when you’ve had enough.
Looking For Something a Little More Active
There’s plenty here if you feel like doing more than just walking.
You’ve got treetop courses, caving, cycling trails, and water activities along the River Wye. Canoeing, paddleboarding, or just sitting by the water for a while all work just as well.
There are also places like old working mines and heritage sites where you can step underground or see how the Forest used to operate. It’s a different pace, but just as interesting.
If You Prefer Something Slower
Not everything here needs to be an activity.
There are quiet gardens, small museums, and places where you can just wander without needing a plan. The kind of places you stop for longer than you expected.
The Forest itself does most of the work. Ancient woodland, open viewpoints, and long paths where you don’t see many people.
Sometimes that’s enough.
A Few Ideas To Get You Started
Rather than list everything all at once, it helps to think in simple categories.
Walks and viewpoints
Easy trails, longer routes, and some of the best views in the area. You’ll find plenty without needing to drive far.
Water and riverside
Canoeing, paddleboarding, wild swimming or just a quiet spot by the River Wye.
History and heritage
Mines, museums, and places that tell the story of how the Forest was shaped.
Something a bit different
Caving, zip wires, Segways, wildlife experiences. Good if you want to mix things up.
Food, drink and local stops
Pubs, cafés, vineyards, and small local places that are worth building into your day.
Planning Your Visit (Or Not Planning At All)
You don’t need to fit everything in.
Most people don’t.
Pick a couple of things that feel right, leave space in between, and see how the day goes. The best parts of a stay here are usually the bits you didn’t plan.
We’ll send you a personal guest guide before you arrive with our own recommendations, along with access to the interactive map so everything is easy to find.
There’s a lot here. More than you’ll get through in one stay.
That’s part of the reason people come back.
We’ve put together a collection of places we think are worth a visit. Take a look through and see what stands out as you plan your time in the Forest of Dean.
A little further afield
If you feel like heading out for the day, there is plenty beyond the Forest itself within easy reach. Monmouth, the Wye Valley and parts of South Wales, including Cardiff, are all straightforward to get to, while Hereford, Gloucester, Cheltenham Spa, the edge of the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills are around an hour away. For a longer day out, Porthcawl is about an hour and a half away, with Pink Bay reached by the boardwalk along the cliffs and Newton Beach a lovely dog-friendly choice
